The Science of the Barrier: Why Not All Alginates Are Created Equal

Most reflux products work by suppressing acid. Khelp doesn't. It creates a physical barrier — and the quality of that barrier depends entirely on the alginate behind it.

How Alginate-Based Relief Actually Works

Alginate is a naturally derived compound sourced from brown seaweed. When it reaches the stomach, it reacts with gastric acid to form a buoyant gel — sometimes called a "raft" — that sits on top of stomach contents. This raft acts as a physical barrier, preventing acid from rising into the esophagus.

It's a fundamentally different approach. Rather than reducing or neutralizing acid your body naturally produces and needs, alginate works with your digestive system by keeping acid where it belongs.

The Problem with Generic Alginate

Not all alginates perform equally. The strength and longevity of the barrier depend on several factors:

Sourcing — alginate's physical properties vary significantly depending on the species of seaweed, where it's harvested, and how it's processed. These differences directly affect how well the gel forms in the stomach.

Buoyancy — the barrier has to float to work. A well-formulated alginate product generates and traps gas within the gel, lifting it to the surface of the stomach contents. Without that, the raft sinks — and a sunken raft can't protect the esophagus.

Durability — how long the barrier holds together under real digestive conditions. A strong raft can remain intact for hours. A weak one breaks down far sooner — not ideal for the person who refluxes at night.

Generic alginates vary widely across all three. Without strict standards for sourcing, processing, and concentration, the barrier you're counting on may not be up to the job.

For Khelp, the alginate is the product. Which is exactly why we don't use generic alginate.

Introducing Alginaid™

Alginaid™ is the gold standard form of sodium alginate — defined by tighter sourcing, higher refinement, and stricter concentration specifications than commodity alternatives. Where most alginate supplements use whatever grade is cheapest and available, Alginaid™ sets the bar for what alginate in a reflux product should actually look like.

Every pouch of Khelp delivers 950mg of USP-grade Alginaid™ per serving, formulated by a board-certified physician who has spent decades working with patients managing GERD and LPR.

Why This Matters

The alginate market is full of undifferentiated products using varying grades of the same raw material. Alginaid™ exists because the ingredient behind the barrier should be held to the same standard as the relief you expect from it.

That's the difference between taking an alginate product and taking Khelp.
